shortfocusedresearch.jpgResearch to Present and Build Knowledge

MD Common Core College and CareerReadiness Standardshave validated what school librarians have known for a long time:in order to be successful in college and beyond, students must be able to gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources, as well as their opinions about it, with others. Students have to be able to research and present their findings. The architects of the Common Core envisioned a workforce that could, gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report on information and ideas.(REGS-C)
They envisioned a workforce that could conduct original research in order to answer questions and solve problems; and analyze and create a high volume and extensive range of print and nonprint texts in media forms old and new.

For Your Convenience: (I created two unpacked documents to use and/or refer to as a guide.)

To Create Your Own:
Step 1: Choose a Grade Level. (Grade 2, 5, 8, 10 or 12)
Step 2: Become familiar with the standards for this grade level and choose your standards to work with:

  • Choose a Social Studies Standard first. (Do this first so that you have an idea of what this standard will demand of students. This will help you choose a Speaking and Listening Standard for assessment.
  • Choose a MDCCR Writing Standard - 7 or 8
  • Choose a Speaking and Listening Standard
MDCCR: K-12 Writing Standards 7 and 8 - from our Crosswalk: (both writing standards are in this document).
